Prepare for a true Kansas City trail experience at the Alternate Chili Ten Mile Trail Run, hitting the rugged paths of Wyandotte County Lake Park on January 18, 2026. This challenging 10-mile race, often described as "a taste of Psycho WyCo," promises a well-marked, very hilly loop primarily on unpaved bridal trails. Runners can expect significant elevation changes throughout the course, with a starting elevation around 837 feet and a high point reaching approximately 995 feet. Typical race day conditions in mid-January often see highs around 41°F and lows near 22°F, with a minimal chance of precipitation, though past events have sometimes encountered cold, wet, and muddy stretches.
Established since 2001, the Alternate Chili Ten Mile Trail Run has built a reputation as an exhilarating and fun event, serving as an excellent training ground for the more extensive Psycho WyCo races. While the course offers limited aid with water and sports drinks, participants are advised to carry their own hydration to tackle the demanding terrain. The race's intimate atmosphere, with a limited number of entrants, ensures a close-knit community feel, drawing praise from runners for its awesome course and friendly vibe.
What truly sets this event apart is the unique post-race celebration. Finishers are rewarded not only with a medal and an oval sticker but also a hearty, beefy, and even gluten-free vegan chili from Muttley's BBQ, accompanied by craft and other beers. Adding to the distinctiveness, awards are handed out in special chili pots to the top male and female finishers, as well as the top girl/boy (14 & under) and even the "Top Dawg," as well-behaved canine pacers are welcome to join the adventure. First-place male and female runners also earn a coveted free entry into the Psycho Wyco race. Free event photos are provided by Mile 90 Photography, capturing every muddy, hilly moment.
