Set against the breathtaking backdrop of California's Eastern Sierra Nevada, the Bishop High Sierra Ultras on May 16, 2026, offers an unforgettable challenge for trail runners. Starting and finishing at Millpond County Park, just north of Bishop, this event features distances of 100K, 50M, 55K, 20M, and a 6K fun run, catering to a wide range of abilities. Participants will navigate a demanding, high-altitude course primarily composed of 4-wheel drive dirt roads with some single-track trails, taking runners through exposed terrain with few trees and spectacular wide-open views of the Owens Valley. Much of the 100K and 50-mile routes climb above 7,000 feet, with the 100K reaching a high point of over 9,000 feet and accumulating more than 11,000 feet of elevation change. Typical race day conditions can range from cool mornings in the mid-40s to warm afternoons reaching the low 80s, with a minimal chance of precipitation.
The Bishop High Sierra Ultras are renowned for their challenging nature and incredible support system. Aid stations, strategically placed every 3 to 7 miles, are famous for their generous variety of food and drinks beyond standard race fare, manned by dedicated volunteers and equipped with medical supplies, foot care, anti-chafe, and sunscreen. Runners are tracked by a local Ham Radio club, ensuring safety and communication throughout the remote sections of the course. This event, operating since 1993, is not only a high-quality race but also serves as an excellent training opportunity for other mountain trail ultras.
Beyond the race itself, finishers receive a custom medallion, and a vibrant post-race meal awaits at the finish line, known for its assortment of hot snacks and real food. The event also benefits the Eastern Sierra Youth Outdoor Program and Inyo County Search and Rescue, adding a layer of community support to this epic adventure. Prepare for a challenging yet rewarding experience amidst the majestic beauty of the Eastern Sierra.
