Participants will toe the line at Mark Watson Park in downtown Sylva, embarking on a relatively flat course that combines both paved and graveled sections. The route guides runners across Business 23, into the peaceful expanse of Monteith Park, and then back to the lively start/finish area at Mark Watson Park.

More than just a race, the Greening Up the Mountains 5K is an integral part of Sylva's 28th annual Greening Up the Mountains Festival, a beloved heritage arts celebration drawing upwards of 12,000 attendees. Runners will be immersed in a festive atmosphere that honors Appalachian art, music, food, and local craft breweries, creating an unforgettable race day experience. Typical race day conditions in late April offer ideal running weather, with highs around 74°F and lows around 45°F, and only an 18% chance of precipitation. All proceeds from this community-focused event directly benefit the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department, supporting local green spaces.
