About This Race

Embark on an astronomical adventure at the Interplanetary 5K, taking place on April 18, 2026, in Peoria, IL. This unique event offers participants a captivating journey through the Central Illinois Community Solar System, recognized as the world's most complete large-scale model of our solar neighborhood. Whether you choose the 5K race or the 1-Mile walk, you'll trace the paths of interplanetary explorers, beginning from the Sun and venturing past scaled models of Mercury, Venus, and Earth, all the way to Mars and back along the scenic Riverfront Trail.

Designed for all ages and fitness levels, the Interplanetary 5K promises an athletic, educational, and fun experience for the entire family. The course itself is entirely flat, providing a fast and enjoyable run or walk along the Riverfront Trail, with the start and finish lines conveniently located at the Gateway Building. Aid stations will be available along the route, with a water stop positioned around the 0.8-mile mark and again at 2.3 miles on the return trip to keep you fueled. Expect typical race day conditions to be pleasant, with highs around 64°F and lows around 43°F, and only a 17% chance of precipitation.

After crossing the finish line, celebrate your cosmic accomplishment with refreshments. Awards will be presented to overall male and female winners, as well as top 5K runners in various age divisions, while Kids' Fun Run participants will receive a special prize. Packet pickup is available the day before, April 17, from 12:30-5:30 PM, or on race day starting at 7:30 AM, both at the Peoria Riverfront Museum auditorium. This race is more than just a run; it's an opportunity to explore the cosmos right in Peoria.
