About This Race

Get ready for a Memorial Day weekend tradition like no other at the historic Narrow Gauge Races, set for Sunday, May 24, 2026, in scenic Durango, Colorado. As the longest continuously run road race in Colorado since 1978, this event offers a challenging 10-mile course and a fast 5K, all starting and finishing at beautiful Santa Rita Park along the Animas River. Runners can anticipate typical race day conditions with highs around 74F and lows near 37F, with only a 3% chance of precipitation, providing ideal weather for a memorable run.

The 10-mile journey presents a diverse terrain of pavement, sidewalk, dirt road, and singletrack trails. Runners will experience a significant climb from the river trail up to Fort Lewis College, rewarded with stunning mountain views of the La Platas, before enjoying a mostly downhill return past Hillcrest Golf Course and along the Animas River Trail. The 5K offers a different yet equally picturesque experience, heading south from Santa Rita Park on dirt trails along the Animas River, winding through the Rivergate community, and returning via the paved river trail. Both courses provide aid stations stocked with water and Tailwind, with four for the 10-miler and one for the 5K, plus basic first aid supplies available.

More than just a race, the Narrow Gauge Races are a beloved community event that supports local beneficiaries, including Big Brothers Big Sisters and area high school and college track teams. Participants will be greeted at the finish line with water, food, and refreshments, and all 10M and 5K finishers receive a custom 16oz can glass. This race is also a highlight of the larger Iron Horse/Memorial Day Weekend, allowing some dedicated athletes to even combine it with a swim and bike race for a unique multi-sport challenge. Bring the whole family; spectators can enjoy the park's playground and views of the Whitewater Park while cheering on runners, including those in the Kids' Fun Run.
