About This Race

Prepare for an epic journey from mountain peaks to desert floors at the Oriflamme 50K, set to challenge runners on April 11, 2026, in the stunning landscapes surrounding Julian, CA. This renowned out-and-back ultra begins at the Sunrise Trailhead, launching participants onto rolling single-track sections of the iconic Pacific Crest Trail. Runners will be treated to breathtaking views of the desert below before embarking on a dramatic descent of over 2,000 feet into Oriflamme Canyon and the desert floor. The course then winds through the picturesque Box Canyon on the California Riding & Hiking Trail, where sandy and rocky terrain leads to the turnaround point in Blair Valley.

Dubbed "one of the toughest 50Ks in SoCal," the Oriflamme 50K is celebrated for its diverse terrain and significant elevation changes, boasting approximately 3,986 feet of gain. The return trip delivers a formidable test with a "climactic 5+ mile climb" back up Oriflamme Canyon, followed by the familiar, yet still challenging, single track to the finish. Aid stations along the route, strategically placed at Mason Valley and S2 (with water-only at Blair Valley turnaround), are fully stocked with water, electrolyte drinks, gels, fruits, and assorted snacks to fuel your adventure. With typical race day conditions seeing highs around 63F and lows near 43F, and only an 8% chance of precipitation, runners can generally expect favorable weather for tackling this incredible course.

Beyond the physical demands, the Oriflamme 50K offers an unforgettable experience with its "down-to-earth, grassroots, no-frills atmosphere" and the unique opportunity to witness the sunrise over the desert before running into its depths. Finishing this 50K, which has been a staple since 2010, earns you a medal, with all entrants receiving a technical t-shirt. Limited to 150 runners and featuring a 9-hour time limit, this race is a must for those seeking a challenging and scenic desert ultra.
