The 3rd Annual Gopher Tortoise Gallop 5K invites runners and walkers to experience a unique and engaging race on Saturday, March 21, 2026, in West Palm Beach, FL. This 5K event takes participants through the beautiful Okeeheelee Park, featuring a scenic course that starts and finishes at the Micanopy Pavilion and passes by the Okeeheelee Nature Center. Runners can expect generally flat terrain, winding through flatwood forest and wetlands, providing a picturesque backdrop for a fantastic day of fitness. Typical race day conditions in late March offer pleasant temperatures, with highs around 80°F and lows around 63°F, and only an 8% chance of precipitation.
What truly sets this race apart is its dedication to celebrating and supporting Florida's official state tortoise. The Gopher Tortoise Gallop highlights this keystone species, renowned for creating burrows that provide homes for over 360 other animal types. All proceeds directly benefit the Friends of Okeeheelee Nature Center, aiding in the enhancement of exhibits, trails, facilities, and educational programs. The race culminates in a festive Gopher Tortoise Day Shell-a-bration at the Nature Center, offering interactive opportunities with tortoises, educational talks, and nature-themed activities, including meet-and-greets with Sparky, the Gopher Tortoise ambassador.
Designed as a family-friendly event for all ages and abilities, the Gopher Tortoise Gallop is a chip-timed race, with awards presented to the top three overall male and female finishers, as well as the top three in each age group, and the largest registered team. Each participant receives a personalized bib with an RFID timing chip, an event shirt, and a beautiful finisher medal. Post-race, healthy snacks and entertainment are available for all participants. The 5K starts promptly at 7:30 AM, so arriving early is recommended, as the Micanopy Pavilion is located on the west side of Okeeheelee Park.
