Prepare for an unforgettable challenge at the 4th Annual Swift Bear Trail Run, set against the stunning backdrop of Hays, Montana, on Saturday, August 8, 2026. This unique event, held in the beautiful Mission Canyon alongside the vibrant Hays Powwow, offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in scenic mountain trails. Runners can choose from three demanding distances: a 50K ultra-marathon, a challenging 20-mile loop, or a spirited 10-mile race.
The course promises a true trail experience, with the 20-mile loop consisting primarily of 2-track roads and gravel, complemented by approximately three miles of pavement. For the 50K, expect hilly terrain with an elevation gain rated between 2,500 and 7,500 feet, featuring sections with rocks, roots, and ruts that will test your endurance. Typical race day conditions in early August include highs around 88°F and lows near 58°F, with only a 5% chance of precipitation, providing generally favorable, albeit warm, running weather. All races begin and conclude on the east end of the powwow grounds, where a white canopy and check-in table mark the start and finish line. Runners are encouraged to meet 30 minutes before their designated start time.
The Swift Bear Trail Run is more than just a race; it's a celebration of trail running within a community event. The addition of the 50K distance for its 4th annual iteration further expands the challenge for seasoned ultrarunners, complete with a cutoff time for reaching the final aid station for safety. While specific aid station details beyond critical cutoff information are TBD, participants can anticipate a well-supported event designed to push their limits amidst Montana's natural splendor. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in the 10 and 20-mile runs, with 50K prizes yet to be announced.
