Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Colorado's majestic Frying Pan Valley, the Basalt Half Marathon offers an unforgettable running experience on Saturday, June 6, 2026. As the 49th annual running of this beloved point-to-point downhill event, participants can choose between the full 13.1-mile individual half marathon or tackle the distance as a 2-person relay team. Renowned as arguably the fastest and most scenic half marathon on the Western Slope, this race is a prime opportunity for personal bests, attracting both competitive runners and those seeking a truly picturesque journey through stunning alpine scenery and riverfront views.
The course itself is a highlight, beginning with a short quarter-mile stretch on a dirt road before transitioning to the paved Frying Pan Road. Runners will enjoy a gradual, approximately 1,000-foot descent over the 13.1 miles, paralleling the famed Frying Pan River known for its gold medal fly-fishing. Four well-stocked aid stations with water and electrolytes are strategically placed along the route at miles 4.5, 6.5, 8.5, and 11, ensuring runners are supported every step of the way. While the road remains open to minimal traffic, runners are instructed to stay single-file on the shoulder and face oncoming vehicles for safety.
Race day begins with convenient bus transport for participants from Basalt Middle School to the start line, with the finish celebration also taking place at the middle school. Typical race day conditions in early June boast comfortable highs around 74°F and lows around 40°F, with only a 4% chance of precipitation, creating favorable running weather. Beyond the personal challenge and stunning views, the Basalt Half Marathon proudly benefits the Basalt High School Cross Country team, adding a layer of community support to this exceptional summer race.
