Embark on an unforgettable nocturnal adventure at the Blackout Night Runs, set for Friday, June 19, 2026, in the majestic ponderosa pines of Flagstaff, Arizona. This unique event, offering 27K, 13K, and 6K distances, is Northern Arizona's only night race, inviting runners to experience the trails under a blanket of stars. Starting and finishing at Fort Tuthill County Park, adjacent to the Flagstaff Extreme Adventure Course, participants will navigate a course that winds through picturesque forests above 7,000 feet, eventually reaching a mesa with expansive mountain views and dark, starry backdrops.
The Blackout Night Runs present a well-graded challenge suitable for all levels, with trails varying from narrow single-track to wide, well-maintained forest paths. The 27K distance features two loops, while the 13K completes one circuit of the Soldiers Trail and Highlands Trail Loop, each offering 1,293 feet and 648 feet of total elevation gain respectively, topping out at a maximum elevation of 7,137 feet. The 6K takes on a modified Soldiers Trail loop with 287 feet of gain. Aid stations, strategically placed every 4.0 to 4.4 miles for the longer distances, are fully stocked with water, Gnarly Fuel-2O electrolyte drink, sweet and salty snacks, and fruit to keep runners fueled. Given the higher elevation, carrying at least one bottle of water is recommended.
What truly sets this race apart is the opportunity to "Double Down" by also participating in the Flagstaff Extreme Big Pine Trail Runs the following morning, earning a distinctive custom medal for completing both day and night versions on the same trails. As part of the popular Insomniac Night Trail Run Series, the Blackout Night Runs promise an exhilarating atmosphere. Typical race day conditions in June see comfortable highs around 82F and lows around 45F, with a minimal 3% chance of precipitation, providing ideal weather for a cool, high-altitude night run. Limited tent-only camping permits are available on-site, enhancing the immersive trail running weekend experience.
