About This Race

Embark on an unforgettable journey at the Blue Heron Hundreds, North Alabama's premier ultra-running event offering 100-mile, 100K, and 50K distances on April 11, 2026, in picturesque Mooresville, AL. This challenging race takes place within the serene Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, a vital wintering ground for migratory birds. Runners can anticipate typical race day conditions with comfortable highs around 73°F and lows near 48°F, alongside an 18% chance of precipitation.

The course, featuring a new layout for this year, guides runners along soft crushed gravel and dirt roads, boasting a flat to nearly flat elevation profile. Each 15.5-mile core loop showcases some of the refuge's best birding and wildflower viewing areas, promising sightings of thousands of waterfowl, cranes, and perhaps even the majestic great blue heron itself. The 100-miler navigates six of these loops with an additional 7-mile section, while the 100K covers four loops and the 50K two. Aid stations, strategically placed and well-stocked, will offer water, electrolytes, sodas, chips, candies, PB&Js, and cookies. The main start/finish aid station, located at 4865 Arrowhead Landing Road, will further provide hot soup, potatoes, quesadillas, and coffee.

Beyond the stunning natural beauty and accessible course, the Blue Heron Hundreds stands out for its commitment to conservation, with a portion of race proceeds benefiting the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge Association. Finishers across all distances will earn a unique blue heron medal, while those conquering the 100-mile challenge will receive a custom belt buckle, commemorating their exceptional achievement. With a generous 32-hour cutoff, this event, presented by Fringe Running, welcomes both seasoned ultra-runners and those looking to push their limits in a supportive and scenic environment.
