Lace up your trail shoes for the Bluewater Canyon Trail Race on Saturday, May 16, 2026, a captivating 5-mile journey through the scenic landscapes of Bluewater, NM. This trail race, presented by Trail Runners Do It In The Dirt and the Cibola Trail Alliance, offers an engaging experience for both runners and walkers, blending a rewarding challenge with breathtaking natural beauty. Beginning at the Bluewater Canyon parking lot, the course starts with a mile along a gravel road before ascending over 500 feet to the top of Bluewater Canyon, providing incredible panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and mesas, with numerous photo opportunities along the way.

The 5-mile route largely follows established dirt roads, incorporating some rocky sections and a loop on the mountain before returning to the start/finish area. Runners can expect approximately 513 feet of elevation gain, with about 95% of the course on unpaved trails, promising a true trail running adventure. To keep you fueled, there will be three aid stations strategically placed along the course. Typical race day conditions in mid-May bring comfortable highs around 77°F and lows around 42°F, with a minimal 2% chance of precipitation, creating an ideal climate for hitting the trails.

Beyond the challenge, the Bluewater Canyon Trail Race stands out with its unique post-race festivities and community spirit. After crossing the finish line, celebrate your accomplishment with a complimentary fruit and beverage buffet. For an extra cool-down, take a refreshing half-mile hike into the canyon for a dip in the cold mountain water of the creek. All finishers will receive custom socks and a medal, with placer awards for the top three male and female finishers, and the top three kids aged 14 and under. Friendly four-legged companions are also welcome to join, provided they adhere to state and local laws. Importantly, all proceeds from the race directly benefit the Cibola Trail Alliance, supporting their vital work on local trail systems.
