Embark on an unforgettable high-country adventure at the 10th annual Bull of the Woods Trail Races, set for Saturday, September 5, 2026, in the stunning Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico. This premier event, starting at approximately 10,000 feet, offers a challenging yet exhilarating experience across distances of 26 Miles, 13 Miles (two distinct half marathons), and a brand-new 10K course. Runners will navigate predominantly tight single-track trails winding through pristine alpine forests, vibrant meadows, and breathtaking overlooks, all designed to maximize your trail running joy and provide a deep sense of accomplishment.
The courses are renowned for their significant elevation gains and jaw-dropping scenery. Marathoners and TSV Half Marathon participants will ascend to the spectacular 12,481-foot Kachina Peak, a "sky-style" high-alpine climb that can include "hands-on-knees" sections and boasts over 7,000 feet of climbing for the marathon/half combined route. Both the marathon and Northside Half Marathon also conquer Fraser Peak at 12,163 feet, offering expansive vistas of the Wheeler Peak Wilderness, La-Cal Basin, Lobo Peak, Gold Hill, and the majestic Wheeler Peak itself. Expect technical, rocky climbs, thrilling ridge descents, flowy singletrack, and two-track roads, culminating in a satisfying finish that showcases the best trails and views Northern New Mexico has to offer. The new 10K course, with nearly 2,000 feet of elevation gain, promises a challenging mix of mountain roads and singletrack.
The race start and finish are conveniently located in the main base area of Taos Ski Valley, at 116 Sutton Place, with drop-bag facilities available. Aid stations are strategically placed along the course, but runners should note that the event is cupless, requiring participants to carry their own hydration vessels. Typical race day conditions in early September include comfortable highs around 75°F and lows near 39°F, with a low chance of precipitation, making for ideal running weather in the high country. A portion of the event proceeds supports the Enchanted Circle Trails Association, contributing to regional trail development and maintenance. The Bull of the Woods Trail Races promise an unforgettable high-altitude challenge and unparalleled natural beauty, ensuring an experience that will leave you with well-earned trail-cred and a lasting smile.
