About This Race

Prepare for an unforgettable trail running experience at the Catamount Ultra on June 20, 2026, in scenic Stowe, Vermont. Celebrating its tenth year, this premier event offers challenging 50K and 25K distances, starting and finishing at the renowned Trapp Family Lodge. The course winds primarily along wide, hard-packed dirt trails, guiding runners through breathtaking highland pastures and lush hardwood forests, complete with active maple sugar tap lines. As you navigate the incredibly well-maintained Trapp Family Lodge multi-use trail system, you'll be treated to spectacular views at the foot of Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak. Expect rolling terrain with approximately 2500 feet of elevation gain and loss per 25K loop, accumulating to a significant 5000 feet for 50K participants, making it a moderately challenging yet runnable course. While mostly smooth, anticipate true trail conditions including loose footing, mud, and some rocky sections. Typical race day conditions in late June bring comfortable highs around 75°F and lows around 51°F, with a roughly 20% chance of precipitation.

Runners can rely on well-stocked aid stations throughout the course, strategically placed at miles 4.6, 9.4, and the start/finish area for each 25K loop. The 50K race offers five on-course aid stations, plus a comprehensive finish/recovery station, all equipped with standard ultra fuel like gels, electrolytes, fruit, and snacks, alongside basic first aid supplies. In an effort to reduce waste, the Catamount Ultra is a cup-free race, so remember to bring your own hydration vessel. For 50K runners, a designated drop bag area is available at the start/finish. The race is lauded by participants for its friendly atmosphere, supportive staff, and the vibrant community of Vermont trail racing.

Crossing the finish line back at the Trapp Family Lodge Outdoor Center, you'll be greeted with a well-deserved post-race meal and a celebratory Von Trapp pilsner in your finisher's glass, a highlight for many. The Catamount Ultra is more than just a race; it's an opportunity to immerse yourself in Vermont's natural beauty and experience a challenging, rewarding event perfect for both seasoned ultrarunners and those looking to push their limits on the trails.
