Cross Country Sundown Showdown

Get ready to lace up for a unique evening challenge at the Cross Country Sundown Showdown, taking place on July 17, 2026, in Carterville, Illinois. This 5K race offers a thrilling opportunity to test your speed as the day cools down, with a 7:00 PM CDT start time. Participants can anticipate typical race day conditions with highs around 89F and lows around 68F, along with a 14% chance of precipitation, making for a potentially refreshing run under the twilight sky.

The course itself promises a classic cross-country experience, predominantly featuring grassy terrain, interspersed with short sections of gravel and paved path. Designed to emulate a high school-style cross country meet, the route will be clearly marked with paint—red for mile 1, white for mile 2, and blue for mile 3—and a lead vehicle will guide runners through the course. The race begins and concludes behind the Carterville Community Center, which also serves as the hub for registration and bib pickup starting at 5:30 PM on race day.

What sets the Sundown Showdown apart is its team-oriented atmosphere, encouraging groups of 3-5 runners to compete with standard cross-country scoring, where the top three team members' placings contribute to the overall score. For those without a full squad, assistance will be provided on race day to form teams, and solo runners are always welcome to join the fun.
