The Crown King Scramble, Arizona's renowned 50K footrace, invites runners to conquer its "Spines to Pines" course on March 28, 2026. This classic point-to-point ultra begins at the serene shores of Lake Pleasant Regional Park in Morristown, Arizona, before embarking on a challenging journey through diverse landscapes to the historic Crown King Saloon in Crown King, Arizona. Celebrating a rich history that dates back to 1987, this event has earned its reputation as a quintessential Arizona experience.
The 50-kilometer (31.1-mile) route is a spectacular display of Arizona's changing topography. The initial 15 miles feature rolling dirt roads through the vibrant Sonoran Desert, adorned with saguaro cacti and offering breathtaking views. As runners progress, the true ascent begins, transitioning onto rugged 4x4 jeep roads. Here, the course climbs nearly 4,000 feet, winding through scrub brush and junipers, culminating in a high point of 6,520 feet around mile 29. The total elevation gain is an impressive 6,528 to 6,828 feet. The final two miles offer a "screaming downhill" descent into the cool Ponderosa pines of the Bradshaw Mountains, delivering participants to a festive finish at the iconic Crown King Saloon.
Runners can anticipate typical race day conditions with highs around 71°F and lows near 40°F, accompanied by a low 3% chance of precipitation, though the varied elevation means conditions can be unpredictable, with cooler temperatures at the higher altitudes. Five well-stocked aid stations along the course provide water, electrolyte drinks, fruits, and snacks, with drop bag access at the French Creek aid station around mile 15.3. Due to the remote nature of the course, crews and pacers are not permitted, emphasizing self-sufficiency and the camaraderie among participants. The Crown King Scramble is celebrated for its challenging yet runnable terrain, stunning scenery, and welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal "first ultra" for those ready to embrace the unique Arizona mountain challenge.
