Prepare to embrace the darkness and conquer a truly unique challenge at the Dark Ages Night Obstacle Race, returning to McHenry, IL, on May 2, 2026. This electrifying 5K obstacle course race transforms the night into a medieval proving ground, inviting warriors of all levels to test their grit under the stars. The torch-lit course will wind through 3.1 miles of forest trails, open fields, and rolling dirt hills, with illuminated obstacles adding to the immersive experience. Expect to encounter a series of challenging obstacles inspired by the medieval era, including technical rigs, various walls, ladder and cargo climbs, atlas stone and wreckbag carries, dark tunnel traverses, a water barrage, and even archery.
What sets the Dark Ages Night Obstacle Race apart is its intense, immersive atmosphere, where limited visibility and the chill of the night (with typical race day conditions seeing highs around 63°F and lows around 42°F, and a 19% chance of precipitation) demand both physical strength and mental toughness. This award-winning event, part of the acclaimed Highlander Assault Race Series, consistently evolves, adding new obstacles and experiences each year. Runners have praised the thrill of navigating the course by headlamp and the challenging nature of the terrain.
Beyond the battle on the course, the experience continues with a vibrant post-race celebration. Participants can look forward to roaring bonfires, live entertainment, and delicious food options, creating a memorable camaraderie among fellow racers. All finishers will earn a custom medal and event t-shirt to commemorate their journey through the Dark Ages. With paramedics on-site and three water stations along the course, you can focus on the adventure. The event village opens at 6 p.m. at the Highlander Assault venue on Fernview Lane, making it a full evening of medieval-themed excitement.
