Shake off the last vestiges of winter and embrace the exhilarating challenge of the Eklutna IceBreaker on Saturday, March 21, 2026! Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Chugach State Park, this unique trail race in Chugiak, Alaska, offers runners the choice of a 10-mile or a demanding 20-mile out-and-back course. The route traces the stunning frozen shoreline of Eklutna Lake, a truly scenic corridor that promises awe-inspiring views with every stride.
Runners embarking on this adventure should prepare for the dynamic beauty and unpredictable "chaos" of Alaskan March conditions. The lakeside trail can present a diverse array of surfaces, from packed and punchy snow to slick ice sheets, mashed-potato mush, and even muddy patches, all under the potential for unexpected sunshine or that magical "winter glow." Typical race day conditions hover around highs of 33F and lows of 16F, with a low chance of precipitation, creating a truly authentic Alaskan running experience. While the course generally follows the lakeside trail with a relatively mild elevation gain, sections may be diverted to an upper road or trail if icy conditions warrant.
The Eklutna IceBreaker is more than just a race; it's an opportunity to re-energize after a long winter. Aid stations, offering water, grab-and-go snacks, and basic medical support, will be strategically located at turnaround points at Mile 5, Mile 10, and an additional stop at Mile 15 for 20-mile participants. Runners should note the absence of cell reception at Eklutna Lake, though race staff will have Starlink at the start/finish, and medical personnel will be at turnaround points, emphasizing safety in this rugged, beautiful environment. All in-person finishers will proudly receive a finisher medal, and top male and female finishers in each distance will earn podium awards.
