Embark on a new adventure at the inaugural Ely Mountain Trail Race on Sunday, August 2, 2026, set amidst the stunning landscapes of Shaver Lake, CA. This premier event, offering challenging 8.7-mile (14K) and 4.97-mile (8K) distances, promises crisp mountain air, significant climbs, and breathtaking panoramic views of the Sierra, Shaver Lake, and the valley below. Typical race day conditions in early August feature highs around 95°F and lows near 69°F, with virtually no chance of precipitation, providing a warm and clear environment for your mountain challenge.

The 14K course presents a formidable test with approximately 1,800 feet of climbing, including a stout 1,000-foot ascent up Ely Mountain. This includes a unique, steep, and rugged granite section that offers a true taste of mountain-style off-trail running before transitioning to smooth, fast singletrack and dirt roads for a thrilling descent to the finish. The 8K route, while slightly less demanding with around 800 feet of elevation gain, still delivers all the invigorating mountain vibes and rewarding views. Aid stations are strategically placed throughout both courses, at miles 1.5, 4.5, and 6.6 for the 14K, and miles 1.5 and 3.1 for the 8K, stocked with GU Roctane drink, GU gels, water, and an assortment of salty and sweet snacks to keep you fueled.

The Ely Mountain Trail Race, an exciting addition to the San Joaquin Running Co lineup, stands out with its capped entry of 250 runners, ensuring an intimate and supportive atmosphere. Participants will receive custom race shirts and finisher medals, with podium awards for top performers. A special "King & Queen of the Mountain" award, featuring a $100 prize for the fastest male and female on the challenging Ely Mountain climb segment (1.14 miles with 919 ft gain), adds a competitive edge. Post-race food and refreshments await at the finish line in Balsam Forebay, with pre-race coffee available from The Pour Over Coffee Company.
