Prepare for a true test of grit and spirit at the Escape From Prison Hill, taking place on April 4, 2026, in the rugged landscapes of Carson City, NV. This challenging event, often dubbed "The Challenge Of An Ultra Without The Distance," offers a Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K, each promising an unforgettable trail running experience. Starting and finishing at the scenic Silver Saddle Ranch on Carson River Road, runners will immediately encounter varied and demanding terrain.
The courses wind through Prison Hill's open space, featuring rocky single track, steep inclines, and narrow mountain trails that demand attention and offer significant elevation changes. Half Marathoners face an approximately 3150-foot elevation gain over 14 miles, including the notable "Dead Truck" climb, which alone accounts for 750 feet of ascent over 1.5 miles, and the formidable "South End" with grades up to 32%. Even the 10K boasts a 900-foot climb up Dead Truck and 1600 feet of overall vertical gain, while the 5K presents over 700 feet of elevation. The reward for these efforts is spectacularly scenic views of the Carson Valley, Pine Nut range, and distant Sierra peaks like Slide, Job's, Job's Sister, and Freel, culminating in a steep, sandy descent towards the Carson River that many runners find exhilarating.
Given the exposed nature of the course with no trees or foliage for shade, participants should come prepared. Typical race day conditions in early April feature comfortable highs around 62°F and lows around 29°F, with a minimal 3% chance of precipitation, but sun exposure is a constant. Aid stations for the Half Marathon are located at approximately mile 8 and mile 11.5, offering water, electrolyte drinks, and snacks; however, 5K and 10K runners should plan to be self-supported as there are no aid stations for these distances. All participants are strongly encouraged to carry their own hydration and fuel to tackle this rigorous, yet incredibly rewarding, journey through the stunning Nevada desert.
