Lace up your trail shoes for the Fall Backyard Burn Trail Run - Laurel Hill, an exhilarating race set for Sunday, October 4, 2026, in picturesque Lorton, VA. As part of the 21st annual Fall Backyard Burn Trail Running Series, this event promises a well-organized and enjoyable experience for all participants. Runners can choose between a challenging 10-mile course or a scenic 5.4-mile loop, both winding through 1600 acres of the former prison grounds at Laurel Hill.
The course itself is a highlight, offering a beautiful mix of forested and open meadow singletrack that is largely composed of dirt and crushed stone, making it one of the series' least technical routes. While there are no extended climbs, the terrain features plenty of short ups and downs, accumulating approximately 350 feet of elevation gain for the 5.4-mile distance and 700 feet for the 10-mile course. The race uniquely begins and ends beneath the historic guard towers of the Workhouse Arts Center, providing a distinctive backdrop to your trail adventure. Expect plentiful aid stations along the way and a fun, supportive atmosphere. Typical race day conditions in early October offer pleasant highs around 71F and lows near 53F, with only an 11% chance of precipitation, creating ideal running weather. As an added bonus, participants have the opportunity to support the local non-profit Homestretch during registration.
