Fire on the Mountain 50K Trail Race

Prepare for an authentic trail challenge at the Fire on the Mountain 50K and 25K Trail Race, set to ignite on Sunday, November 1, 2026, in the rugged beauty of Little Orleans, MD. Nestled within the expansive 48,000-plus acres of Green Ridge State Forest, this event offers a genuine taste of Western Maryland's Appalachian terrain. The 50K course, spanning approximately 31.95 to 32.8 miles, features an estimated 5,387 feet of elevation gain and loss, although some reports suggest over 5,000 feet of vertical challenge. Runners will navigate a diverse landscape including about 6.5 miles of technical singletrack, complete with roots, rocks, and "billy goat" trails that can be narrow and sloped towards creeks, along with 9.6 miles of forest service and improved dirt roads. The 25K route, approximately 16.3 miles, also promises a demanding 2,700 feet of elevation gain, with earlier climbs compared to its longer counterpart. Starting at Point Lookout on Carroll Road, the out-and-back course is known for its unique character, with the return leg offering a distinct experience from the initial miles. Typical race day conditions in early November include comfortable highs around 60F and lows near 38F, with a 12% chance of precipitation, creating ideal cool-weather running.

The Fire on the Mountain is renowned for its low-key yet well-organized atmosphere, attracting runners to a friendly and laid-back event.
