Lace up for an unforgettable experience at the Fort Custer "Defender" 5K, set to take place on Saturday, May 2, 2026, in Augusta, MI. Hosted by the 177th Regional Training Institute (RTI) MIARNG, this marks the fourth annual running of this unique 5K, welcoming participants of all abilities to the scenic Fort Custer Training Center. The flat, paved course offers a straightforward run or walk around the main part of the installation and a short section of the training area, though runners should note that it utilizes two-lane roads still open to vehicle traffic. Typical race day conditions in early May feature comfortable highs around 67°F and lows near 44°F, with only a 15% chance of precipitation, providing ideal weather for a fantastic race.
Beyond the kilometers, the Fort Custer "Defender" 5K provides a distinctive opportunity to explore an active military installation. Participants can enjoy access to the Fort Custer Museum and impressive military vehicle displays, open until noon on race day. A water station strategically placed at the crossroads of 26th and Armstrong ensures hydration is available just before the first mile and again after the second. All finishers will proudly receive a specially designed medal, and those who register by April 15, 2024, are also guaranteed a pair of exclusive running socks.
With a participant cap of 250, this family-friendly event offers a welcoming and engaging atmosphere. Race day logistics are streamlined with packet pickup and registration beginning at 7:00 AM along "Custers First Stand," located on the Northeast corner of the parking area, with the race starting at 9:00 AM. Strollers are welcome on the course, though pets are not permitted. Restrooms are conveniently located inside the All-Ranks Club and the Fort Custer Education Center, ensuring a comfortable experience for all participants before and after the 10:15 AM awards ceremony held in the military vehicle display area.
