This popular event offers distances for every runner, including a 100K, 50K, and two Half Marathon options, including a Half Marathon Hiker. Known for its relatively flat rail trail course, the Freight Train is often cited as a fast course and an excellent choice for first-time ultra runners, with the 100k boasting less than 1500 feet of total elevation gain. Originally held in December, the race was moved to May to take advantage of more favorable weather, with typical race day conditions seeing highs around 76°F and lows around 52°F, alongside an 18% chance of precipitation.

The course is primarily set on the historic High Bridge Trail, a non-technical route that offers a unique running experience, highlighted by all participants crossing the famed High Bridge twice during their journey. Most distances begin from Camp Paradise, sending runners on out-and-back sections that traverse charming areas like downtown Farmville, Tuggle, and Prospect. While aid stations are well-supported with typical ultra fare including bananas, PB&J, salty snacks, water, and Heed, 100K runners should be prepared for one longer 6.5-mile stretch between Prospect and the Pamplin turnaround, where carrying extra water is advised.
