Experience the breathtaking beauty of northern Arizona at the Grand Canyon Trail Marathon, Half-Marathon, & 5k Run/Walk on October 24, 2026. This esteemed event, now in its eighth year, invites runners and walkers to conquer challenging yet scenic terrain just a stone's throw from the iconic Grand Canyon South Rim. Starting and finishing in Tusayan, Arizona, near the IMAX Visitor Center, the course winds through the stunning Kaibab National Forest, within the recently designated Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument.
Participants in the 26.8-mile Marathon and 13.4-mile Half-Marathon will navigate a dynamic mixed-surface course, beginning on a sidewalk before transitioning to approximately 11.5 miles of challenging forest jeep roads featuring rugged, rocky sections, soft dirt, and hard-packed trails. The final mile offers a rolling finish on a paved section of the Arizona Trail, all under a canopy of trees where local wildlife might make an appearance. The Half-Marathon, known for its hills and ruggedness, boasts a total ascent of over 550 feet and a maximum elevation exceeding 6,700 feet, making it a demanding yet rewarding experience where top runners typically finish slower than on road races. For those opting for the 3.1-mile 5k, the route is mostly paved with about a mile of hard-pack dirt forest road. Typical race day conditions in late October offer comfortable highs around 78°F and lows around 55°F, with a minimal 1% chance of precipitation.
Beyond the run, the Grand Canyon Trail Marathon offers a vibrant atmosphere with post-race festivities including a beer garden and an artisan fair showcasing local and Tribal crafts. Runners receive a coveted souvenir medal and a colorful long-sleeve shirt to commemorate their achievement. Praised by participants for its "amazing course and event" and supportive volunteers, this race also contributes to the community by supporting the Tusayan Fire Department and the Grand Canyon Food Pantry. Aid stations, equipped with water and menstrual products as a Trail Sisters Approved event, are strategically placed for the Half-Marathon, though runners are encouraged to be self-sufficient.
