About This Race

Embark on an unforgettable trail running adventure at the Grand Island, held on July 25, 2026, in Munising, MI. This flagship event, now managed by Aravaipa Running and formerly of Great Lakes Endurance, offers 50K, Marathon, and Half Marathon distances across the rugged and pristine wilderness of Grand Island, nestled in Lake Superior. Known as one of the most breathtaking and scenic trail races in the Midwest, runners are ferried to Williams Landing on the island, kicking off a truly unique experience. Typical race day conditions feature pleasant highs around 77°F and lows around 57°F, with only a 10% chance of precipitation, creating ideal running weather.

The course itself is a feast for the senses, predominantly traversing singletrack, two-track, and dirt forest roads, offering a non-technical yet challenging trail experience. Runners will circumnavigate portions of the island, encountering towering Jacobsville sandstone cliffs, lush hardwood forests, and sweeping vistas of Lake Superior and the iconic Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Highlights include running along sandy beaches, exploring hemlock tunnels, and passing picturesque spots like Trout Bay, Murray Bay, Duck Lake, and Echo Lake. While the Marathon features around 850 feet of elevation gain, the 50K ascent reaches approximately 2,890 feet, including a challenging detour to Echo Lake and the island's summit.

Grand Island is celebrated for its seamless organization, from shuttle services in Munising to the ferry ride, all included with your race bib. Aid stations, strategically placed throughout the course (up to six for the 50K), provide cold water, Gnarly Fuel2O energy drink, Hammer Gels, and Hammer Nutrition Fizz. Embracing an eco-conscious philosophy, this is a zero-waste event, requiring all participants to carry a minimum 20 oz water bottle for refills, as no cups are provided. Runners consistently praise the stunning scenery, the supportive atmosphere, and the unforgettable sense of adventure, often culminating in a refreshing post-race plunge into the cool waters of Lake Superior.
