About This Race

Embark on a picturesque journey through Northern California at the Great Shasta Rail Trail races on July 25, 2026, in McCloud, CA. Offering 50K, 30K, and 10K distances, this event promises a memorable experience on a remarkably flat course with excellent footing, perfect for setting a new personal record or tackling a new distance. Runners will be treated to beautiful crisp mountain air and breathtaking views of majestic Mount Shasta as they traverse 100% un-paved trails. Typical race day conditions in late July feature comfortable lows around 54°F and highs near 92°F, with virtually no chance of precipitation.

The course follows an out-and-back format along the historic Great Shasta Rail Trail, a scenic conversion of an old railroad line that winds through pristine mountains, open forests, and alongside creeks and lakes. This non-motorized multi-use trail connects to the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and offers glimpses of Burney Mountain. Aid stations are strategically placed approximately every 3 to 6 miles, fully stocked with HEED electrolyte drink mix, common runner snacks, and ample ice, with water drops available during warmer conditions. Porta potties are located at the start/finish area and the 50K turnaround.

Beyond the stunning scenery and well-supported course, the Great Shasta Rail Trail race, organized by Intermountain Endurance, stands out for its commitment to preserving this beautiful route. All runners receive a race shirt and a satisfying post-race meal, while all finishers are awarded a medal. The event also proudly offers free registration to Indigenous/Native American runners. With a generous 12-hour cutoff for all distances, this event fosters a welcoming atmosphere for all participants to achieve their goals.
