Prepare to push your limits at the Grin & Bear It, Crested Butte's oldest trail challenge, returning on July 11, 2026. This iconic event, continuously run for decades, invites runners and mountain bikers to experience the stunning Colorado mountains. Participants can choose from three demanding distances: the classic 9.32-mile (15K) out-and-back run, the challenging 15.53-mile (25K) loop run, or the rugged 14.83-mile mountain bike race. All races begin and end at the Crested Butte Nordic Center in downtown Crested Butte, offering convenient access and amenities. Typical race day conditions in July offer pleasant highs around 77°F and lows around 40°F, with a low 7% chance of precipitation, creating ideal conditions for a mountain adventure.
The Grin & Bear It courses are renowned for their breathtaking scenery and significant elevation changes. Runners on the 15K out-and-back face approximately 1,600 feet of elevation gain and loss, winding along the Green Lake Trail to Green Lake and back, primarily on singletrack. The 25K loop is even more formidable, featuring around 2,900 feet of elevation gain and loss. This course climbs through shaded aspens, offers panoramic vistas of Mt. Crested Butte, and ascends to a high point of 10,983 feet with expansive views of the Elk Mountain Range and upper Gunnison Valley. The 14.83-mile mountain bike course follows the 25K run route, minus a short detour to Green Lake, and includes nearly 4,000 feet of climbing on technical terrain, making it a true test of skill and endurance. Expect limited aid, with hydration (water and electrolytes) and energy gels available at key points like Green Lake; participants are required to carry at least 16 ounces of water.
What truly sets the Grin & Bear It apart is its unique blend of challenge and camaraderie. Runners on the 25K loop have the option to take a "refreshing alpine lake dunk" at the Green Lake checkpoint. For an extra thrill, the first male and female 25K runners and mountain bikers reaching designated points can claim an "Awkward Load" to carry to the finish line for a $100 premium, adding a fun, competitive twist to the race. Finishing this grassroots event is celebrated with a post-race brunch and refreshing Eddyline beer, solidifying its reputation as a memorable and rewarding experience for both seasoned trail enthusiasts and those seeking a formidable challenge in a stunning mountain setting.
