Lace up for an unparalleled running experience at the GWB Challenge, set to take place on Sunday, June 7, 2026, in Fort Lee, NJ. This extraordinary event offers runners and walkers the rare opportunity to traverse the iconic George Washington Bridge, choosing between a 3.1-mile (5K) or a 6.2-mile (10K) distance. What truly sets this race apart is that the American Cancer Society is the sole organization with the unique permission to shut down the lower level of the world's busiest bridge, transforming it into an unforgettable course that directly supports vital cancer research and patient care.
The GWB Challenge boasts breathtaking scenery as you run or walk across this engineering marvel, providing expansive views of the Hudson River and the New York City skyline. The course begins at 220 Bruce Reynolds Blvd in Fort Lee, leading participants onto the bridge. The 5K route turns around at the NY/NJ border before descending into the picturesque Palisades Interstate Park by Ross Dock, which also serves as the finish line. Those tackling the 10K will experience the thrill of crossing the bridge twice, taking in even more of the spectacular vistas. While primarily a road race, the 10K features some elevation changes, with an ascent of approximately 659 feet and a descent of 909 feet, presenting an engaging challenge. On typical race day, expect conditions around 80F for highs and 61F for lows, with about an 18% chance of precipitation.
Runners can anticipate a well-supported event, which has been an annual tradition for over 30 years, drawing between 500 and 1,000 participants. There will be two water stops along the route, strategically placed on Hudson Terrace and directly on the bridge, complemented by PortAJohns at the start, finish, and on the course. Positive runner feedback highlights the unique nature of the bridge closure, the incredible city views, and the ample support from race officials. Given limited parking at the start line (231 Main Street, Fort Lee NJ), carpooling and ride-sharing are highly recommended, with convenient shuttle services available to transport spectators and finishers between the start and the Ross Dock finish line. Join for the views, the challenge, and most importantly, for a meaningful cause.
