Get ready for an unparalleled challenge and breathtaking scenery at the Hahns Peak Vertical Trail Race on July 5, 2026, in Clark, Colorado. This iconic 8-mile out-and-back trail run, steeped in local history, invites runners to conquer the majestic Hahns Peak, an ancient volcano reaching an elevation of 10,839 feet. The course starts at the Quarry Lot and plunges you straight into an unforgettable ascent, featuring 2,200 feet of elevation gain over just four miles. Expect a diverse terrain of jeep roads, winding single track, and a rigorous final push up a loose rock and talus slope to the summit. Chutes are clearly marked to guide your climb and descent on this demanding section, ensuring a challenging yet safe experience.
As you battle the vertical, you'll be rewarded with stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding Colorado wilderness from the historic 1912 fire lookout tower atop Hahns Peak. The course is truly a test of grit, known amongst runners as a "challenge course that is not for the faint of heart." Aid stations are available around mile 2 (ascending) and mile 6 (descending) providing water and Honey Stinger products, but remember to bring your own hydration pack or bottle as there is no water on the summit and the race is cup-less. Typical race day conditions in early July include highs around 86°F and lows around 49°F, with only a 4% chance of precipitation, so be prepared for warmth on the exposed sections.
The Hahns Peak Vertical Trail Race, an integral part of the Steamboat Springs Running Series, originated from a spirited tradition of local runners racing to the summit every 4th of July. Today, it benefits the Steamboat Springs High School Track & Field and Cross Country programs, allowing your effort to support local youth athletics. Don't miss the chance to capture that triumphant "jump shot" at the peak and perhaps even spot the legendary North Routt Yeti! The awards ceremony and raffle, with fantastic prizes from local sponsors, will take place near the start/finish line at the Quarry Lot.
