The Hairpin 5K, set for July 4, 2026, in scenic Fish Creek, WI, is Door County's longest-running 5K and a cherished Fourth of July tradition for runners and walkers of all ages. This popular 5K event attracts over 1,000 participants annually, offering a challenging yet rewarding experience while supporting a great cause. Hosted by the Friends of Gibraltar Schools for over 30 years, proceeds from the race directly fund enrichment programs for K-12 students at Gibraltar Schools, raising around $20,000 each year.
The course begins at the Alexander Noble House Museum Park on Highway 42, immediately testing runners with the challenging ascent of Fish Creek Hill. From the summit, participants are treated to a stunning view overlooking the charming village of Fish Creek and Peninsula State Park. The route then winds down Gibraltar Bluff Road before tackling the famous, steep switchback of the "hairpin turn" on Cottage Row, the very feature that gives this race its distinctive name. The race concludes just before re-entering the village, offering a beautiful homestretch through a wooded canopy and past picturesque homes. While Highway 42 is briefly closed at the start, other sections of the course utilize quiet back roads that remain open to traffic, requiring runners to exercise caution. Strollers are welcome, but dogs are not permitted on the course.
Typical race day conditions in early July include highs around 79°F and lows around 57°F, with only an 11% chance of precipitation, providing generally favorable weather for a festive morning run. A water station is available near the halfway point, and finishers are greeted with water and snacks, including cookies, at the finish line. With its demanding hills, breathtaking views, and long-standing community impact, the Hairpin 5K offers a unique and memorable way to celebrate Independence Day.
