This iconic race, a cornerstone of the annual National Tom Sawyer Days festivities, offers distances of 15K, 10K, and 5K, alongside a 5K leisure walk, ensuring a thrilling experience for every participant. Known for its tagline, "It'll eat you up!", the Hannibal Cannibal lives up to its reputation with a USA Track and Field certified course that begins in downtown Hannibal and traces a scenic path along the mighty Mississippi River.

The true test of grit comes with the infamous "Lover's Leap," a demanding hill that runners tackle on the return leg. Described by past participants as a "gargantuan hill" and "one of Hannibal's toughest," this steep climb, with its 100-foot elevation gain, is where the race truly earns its "Cannibal" moniker. Despite the challenge, runners consistently praise the vibrant atmosphere, the well-organized event, and the stunning riverfront views. You'll find ample support with four water stations along the out-and-back course, including strategically placed stops at the 5K and 10K turnarounds, and crucially, at the summit of Lover's Leap, all stocked with bottled water. First Aid is also available at Lover's Leap and the finish line, with medical personnel along the course.

Typical race day conditions in early July include highs around 86°F and lows near 67°F, with a 16% chance of precipitation, so prepare for a warm and potentially humid run. The event features a convenient rolling start between 6:30 AM and 7:00 AM, allowing participants to begin their journey at their own pace, but be mindful of the 9:00 AM course closure.
