About This Race

Embark on an unforgettable trail running adventure at the Headwaters Trail Runs, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Shasta, California, on June 20, 2026. Offering challenging distances of 52K, 34K, and 10K, this grassroots event takes runners deep into the scenic Klamath Mountains, west of Mount Shasta City. Participants will experience clean mountain air and stunning views of majestic Mt. Shasta and Mt. Eddy, with typical race day conditions seeing highs around 80F and lows around 49F, and only a 3% chance of precipitation.

The 52K and 34K races feature mountainous loop courses, primarily on single-track trails and dirt forest roads, winding through rugged terrain that hosts the crystal-clear headwaters of California's longest river. The 52K boasts an approximate 8,000 feet of elevation gain, while the 34K presents a formidable 4,000 feet. Both longer distances include miles on the historic Sisson-Callahan National Recreation Trail. For those seeking a faster yet picturesque experience, the 10K course follows the Lake Siskiyou Trail along the forested shores of picturesque Lake Siskiyou, offering about 400 feet of total gain on a mostly dirt surface with a short paved section across Box Canyon Dam. All races start and finish near the Box Canyon Dam at Lake Siskiyou.

Runners can expect fully-stocked aid stations along the courses, supported by a welcoming and enthusiastic volunteer staff. As a cupless event, participants are required to carry their own hydration vessel. Beyond the challenging trails, the Headwaters Trail Runs are renowned for a hearty, organic post-race meal prepared by local chef Jacqueline Hertzog, often described as "the best post-race meal anywhere!" Finishers also receive a commemorative race t-shirt and a unique finisher's medal, making this an event that combines breathtaking scenery, formidable courses, and a vibrant community atmosphere. A portion of the proceeds also benefits the Mt. Shasta High School cross-country team.
