Heart and Sole Road Race

This beloved event, celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2026, offers runners and walkers the choice of a flat and fast 5-mile or 2-mile out-and-back course, starting and finishing at Riverside Park in downtown Pittsville. Both routes are designed for speed, with water stations strategically placed along the way to keep participants hydrated. The race is chip-timed, providing accurate results for all competitors.

Beyond the personal challenge, the Heart and Sole Road Race is a cornerstone of Pittsville's vibrant 4th of July festivities, creating a "Summer Homecoming" atmosphere for both locals and returning residents. This well-established event began in 1987 as the Pittsville Centennial Run and quickly evolved into the Heart and Sole race, growing to over 900 registrants in past years. It serves as a crucial fundraiser for the Pittsville Volunteer Fire Department and EMS Service, contributing to essential equipment purchases and supporting local students through two college scholarships.

Runners can anticipate typical race day conditions with highs around 88°F and lows near 67°F, alongside a low 13% chance of precipitation, making for a warm summer evening run. After crossing the finish line, celebrate your achievement with complimentary refreshments, including free ocean spray juice, snacks, fresh fruit, and Renee's famous homemade granola. The post-race celebration continues in Riverside Park with live music and carnival rides, capping off a memorable community event. For added convenience, showers will be available at the local high school from 5-9 PM. Strollers are welcome to participate, starting towards the back, ensuring an inclusive experience for all.
