About This Race

Prepare for an unparalleled challenge and breathtaking beauty at the Heavens Gate Marathon and Half Marathon in Riggins, Idaho, on May 2, 2026. This isn't just a race; it's a profound journey through the majestic Seven Devils, offering some of the most pristine canyon trails and dramatic vertical relief on Earth. Participants can choose between the formidable 53K or the demanding 26K, both promising an unforgettable mountain running experience. For those seeking an extra thrill, a Friday afternoon 2-3K Vertical Race ascends to the summit of Challenger Peak.

The courses are renowned for their jaw-dropping views and abundant wildlife, launching runners from the canyon bottom into the alpine realm of Cannonball Mountain. The 53K ultra is an extended route encompassing Cannonball Mountain and additional rugged terrain, boasting approximately 13,000 feet of total climbing, making it one of the most challenging races of its distance globally. The 26K classic loop navigates up Blue Gulch, over Cannonball Mountain, down to McRea Cabin, and back through the canyon, accumulating about 6,000 feet of climbing. While there are flat to rolling sections, the true challenge lies in the exceptionally steep ascents.

Runners will begin and end their adventure at the Rapid River Fish Hatchery, conveniently located just five miles from the amenities of Riggins. Aid stations are strategically placed to support runners, with two manned stations and additional water stops for the 53K, and one manned station with several water stops for the 26K; a mandatory gear and nutrition kit is required for the 53K. Typical race day conditions in early May feature highs around 57°F and lows around 32°F, with a minimal 9% chance of precipitation, providing ideal weather for tackling this serious mountain race.
