About This Race

Embark on an unforgettable trail running adventure at the Hell Creek Half & 50k, set for August 29, 2026, in the stunning landscapes of Sylvan Grove, Kansas. Presented by Ultraverse Supplements, this race takes you along the renowned Switchgrass Mountain Bike Trail at Wilson State Park, hailed as the only EPIC-rated mountain bike trail between the Rockies and the Ozarks. Runners will experience a course that is rugged yet 100% runnable, featuring mostly single-track terrain with minimal tree cover. This exposed trail offers continuous, breathtaking views of the "clearest lake in Kansas," Wilson Lake, while providing a true test against the elements. Typical race day conditions in late August see highs around 88°F and lows around 62°F, with a 13% chance of precipitation.

The Hell Creek Half Marathon covers a challenging 13-mile loop with approximately 1300 feet of elevation gain/loss, while the Hell Creek 50k pushes endurance further with a 19-mile loop followed by the half marathon course, totaling closer to 32 miles and boasting around 3000 feet of elevation gain/loss. The course is exceptionally well-marked with ribbons, flags, and wrong-way signs, ensuring an easy-to-follow route even through the hilly sections. Aid stations are strategically located at the start/finish and at "Hell Hill," offering a variety of typical ultra-foods, water, soda, and Proxima C Endurance Fuel. An unmanned water station is also available at mile 5, with an additional one around mile 13 on the Hell Creek Loop for 50k participants.

Starting and finishing at the Switchgrass trailhead near the restroom parking lot, the Hell Creek Half & 50k promises not only a physical challenge but also a rewarding experience. Finishers of the half marathon will receive a custom wooden medal, while 50k finishers earn a distinctive 50k buckle, alongside a dri-fit tank top for all entrants. Unique to this event, fur-babies running with their owners are even awarded pup-specific Hell Creek medals! This race also serves as an excellent training ground for the Hell Creek 100 race series and is a proud part of the Ultraverse Kansas Slam series.
