Honolulu Rainbow EKIDEN 2026

Set against the stunning backdrop of Honolulu, Hawaii, the Honolulu Rainbow EKIDEN 2026 invites runners to experience a unique blend of competitive spirit and island aloha on Sunday, March 15, 2026. This vibrant event, celebrating its 10th anniversary, offers a challenging and picturesque 5K course, primarily designed as an Ekiden relay, where teams of 3-5 members tackle five individual 5km laps. Individual runners can also partake in a single 5K Fun Run & Walk, while younger participants can enjoy the 'Oli'oli Kids Challenge. Typical race day conditions in mid-March feature comfortable highs around 81°F and lows near 68°F, with a minimal 7% chance of precipitation, creating an ideal climate for running.

The course itself begins in Kapiolani Park, situated on the eastern end of Waikiki, and features a road surface with some elevation gain as it ascends Diamond Head Road. Runners will be treated to breathtaking scenery along the seaside, boasting expansive blue ocean views, swaying palm trees, and the iconic Diamond Head crater. The looped nature of the course is a distinctive highlight, fostering a communal atmosphere where runners can cheer on teammates and fellow participants throughout the event.

What truly sets the Honolulu Rainbow EKIDEN apart is its embrace of the traditional Japanese Ekiden relay format, emphasizing unity and teamwork as participants pass a "tasuki" sash, crafted from a traditional Hawaiian ribbon lei, connecting them to the island's natural "mana" or energy. Inaugurated in 2013, the race has grown into Hawaii's premier community sports festival, celebrated by locals and visitors alike for its fun, inclusivity, and spirit of friendship and health. As a sister event of the Honolulu Festival, the race culminates in an unforgettable celebration, including a grand parade and a spectacular world-class Nagaoka Fireworks display over Waikiki Beach.
