Embark on an unforgettable journey into the heart of the wild Montana backcountry with the HURL Elkhorn Endurance Runs on August 1, 2026. Staged in the remote and rugged Elkhorn Mountains near Clancy, MT, this event offers a true test of grit across its 50-mile, 50-kilometer, and 13.1-mile distances, renowned as Montana's oldest trail ultra. Prepare to leave civilization behind on courses featuring zero pavement, only spectacular singletrack, primitive jeep roads, and maintained dirt Forest Service roads.

Each distance promises breathtaking climbs, technical descents, and expansive Montana views, with the 50M boasting approximately 13,400 feet of elevation gain to nearly 9,000 feet, the 50K challenging runners with 7,900 feet of gain to 8,000 feet, and the 13.1M offering 3,300 feet of ascent to 7,200 feet. Runners will navigate through forests, meadows, and numerous cold, clear creek crossings, frequently encountering diverse wildlife such as deer, elk, moose, bear, coyote, and mountain goats, truly "removing you from the top of the food chain". Aid stations are well-stocked with essentials and treats like Hammer Heed, gels, watermelon, cookies, and pretzels, with some remote locations even supplied by horsepack.

The HURL Elkhorn is celebrated for its low-key, friendly, and laid-back Montana atmosphere, yet its reputation for being a "tough event" is well-earned, with many finishers calling the 50-mile course the hardest they've run. The courses are exceptionally well-marked, guiding runners through challenging terrain where trails can sometimes disappear in meadows. Typical race day conditions in early August bring highs around 88°F and lows around 56°F, with a minimal 3% chance of precipitation, though runners should be prepared for potential rapid temperature drops if afternoon thunderstorms roll in. All races begin and end at the Willard Creek Trailhead, where primitive camping is available for an immersive race weekend experience.
