Prepare for an unforgettable challenge as "In the Heat of the Night" returns to Anniston, AL, on August 8, 2026. This iconic event, organized by Dirty Soles Trail Races, offers distances of 100K, 50K, 25K, and 10K, inviting runners to experience the Talladega National Forest under a blanket of stars. What began as Alabama's first 100K trail race has evolved into a unique nocturnal adventure, pushing runners from sunset to sunrise.
The course is set on maintained dirt and gravel forest roads, winding through the Talladega Forest and alongside the scenic Pinhoti Trail. While not overly technical with minimal roots, previous years have seen some rocky sections due to grading, so runners should be prepared for varied surfaces. The 10K is an out-and-back with 596 feet of elevation gain, while the 25K, 50K, and 100K distances tackle a challenging loop, accumulating approximately 1,980 ft, 3,950 ft, and a formidable 7,920 ft of elevation gain respectively. For 2026, an even year, the loop will be run counter-clockwise, offering a different perspective for returning participants.
Runners embarking on this twilight journey will find comprehensive support with three fully stocked aid stations offering warm food at night, plus an additional water-only station, all within a cupless event framework. Despite typical race day conditions seeing highs around 91°F and lows around 71°F, the humidity and the surprising chill of the night mean proper hydration, electrolyte planning, and headlamps are absolutely essential. Beyond the race itself, the finish line at Frog Pond Overlook promises a celebratory atmosphere with music, food, and mimosas to toast the sunrise and cheer on the resilient 100K finishers. With its storied history and reputation for selling out quickly, "In the Heat of the Night" offers a truly distinctive and rewarding trail running experience.
