About This Race

Lace up for an unforgettable journey through the heart of West Virginia at the Kanawha Trace Trail Run on March 28, 2026, in Ona, WV. This point-to-point race, offering challenging distances of 50K, 25K, and 10K, traverses the historic Kanawha Trace, a path originally envisioned by Charlie Dundas in 1962 by connecting ancient bison and Native American trails. Maintained today by the dedicated Friends of The Kanawha Trace and local scouts, the course promises a truly unique and deeply rooted West Virginian trail experience.

Runners will navigate a course primarily composed of single-track trails, weaving through three West Virginia counties (Putnam, Mason, and Cabell) and showcasing diverse terrain. Expect to conquer ridges, cross bridges and creeks, pass through tunnels and meadows, and even glimpse a scenic waterfall. While predominantly singletrack, the course also incorporates sections of country dirt and paved roads. The 50K boasts over 4,000 feet of elevation gain, featuring frequent, often steep, climbs and descents that will test your grit. Aid stations, strategically placed approximately every 5 miles for the longer distances, are well-stocked with "ultra-run cuisine," including PB&J, fruit, cookies, pretzels, and hydration options like Coke, Mtn. Dew, and Tailwind.

Starting in Fraziers Bottom and concluding at Camp Arrowhead in Ona, the Kanawha Trace Trail Run ensures a seamless experience with bus transportation provided from the finish line to the starting points. Typical race day conditions in late March offer pleasant temperatures, with highs around 65°F and lows near 39°F, and a modest 16% chance of precipitation. This event is more than just a race; it's an immersive exploration of West Virginia's natural beauty and history, culminating with a custom Boco hat and a unique Bear Wood finisher medal for 50K and 25K participants, while 10K finishers receive a choice of a custom buff or running socks along with their medal.
