Kennebec Mountain Run

Embark on an unforgettable alpine adventure at the Kennebec Mountain Run, a challenging 15-mile trail race set for Saturday, August 1, 2026, in the stunning La Plata Mountains near Hesperus, Colorado. This iconic event, established in 2001, has earned its reputation as a local favorite, drawing runners to test their skills on a rugged course that boasts an impressive 3,100 feet of elevation gain. The journey culminates at Kennebec Pass, topping out at 12,200 feet, where runners are rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of the Animas River and Dolores River valleys, often adorned with vibrant alpine wildflowers in full bloom. The course direction alternates each year, with 2026 featuring a counterclockwise route.

The Kennebec Mountain Run is more than just a race; it's a true mountain experience known for its challenging terrain and breathtaking scenery. Runners should be prepared for a self-sufficient approach, as there is one aid station, "The Fork," which participants will pass twice, at mile 4.2 and mile 10.4. This station provides water and Tailwind, but a personal hydration system is mandatory, as no cups are supplied. Typical race day conditions in early August include highs around 85°F and lows around 53°F, with a minimal 7% chance of precipitation, creating ideal conditions for a high-altitude effort.

Starting and finishing at the La Plata City Campground on County Road 124, the Kennebec Mountain Run caps entries at 150 participants, ensuring an intimate and competitive atmosphere. Beyond the personal challenge, this non-profit event proudly supports La Plata County Search & Rescue with all proceeds, requiring participants to hold an active Colorado Search & Rescue (CORSAR) Card. Finishers can anticipate a lively post-race celebration with burritos, beer, and other refreshments, and the top three overall male and female finishers even earn coveted freshly-baked KMR pies!
