Embrace the final challenge of the year at the Last Chance Marathon and Half Marathon, set for December 31, 2026, in scenic Bellingham, Washington. This event offers runners a unique opportunity to complete a 26.2-mile marathon or a 13.1-mile half marathon on an engaging course that promises both beauty and a satisfying test of endurance. Starting at the Fairhaven Park Pavilion, the out-and-back course winds along the picturesque Interurban Trail to Clayton Beach, with marathoners completing two loops. You'll traverse a mostly flat, packed gravel surface—an old railroad bed—interspersed with "just enough hills to make it interesting," particularly through the double-track trails of Arroyos Park, which feature a few bridges and fun ascents. The trail boasts spectacular views, and a tree canopy offers some protection from the elements.

Runners can anticipate typical race day conditions with highs around 46°F and lows around 34°F, with a 22% chance of precipitation, and historical data suggests the possibility of snow or sleet, so dressing in layers is advisable. While runners are encouraged to be self-sufficient with hydration, well-stocked aid stations are strategically placed approximately every 3.5 miles along the course, offering water, electrolyte drinks, and "ultra-style foods" like bananas, pretzels, and an assortment of candies. Full marathoners will have seven opportunities to refuel, while half marathoners will have three. Drop bags are also available at the start/finish and the turnaround point.

The Last Chance Marathon is celebrated for its well-organized, smaller-race atmosphere and supportive community. Participants appreciate the heated pavilion and unlocked bathrooms at Fairhaven Park, and the "great homecoming" at the finish line, which includes hot soup, sandwiches, and snacks—a perfect way to celebrate your year-end achievement. Finishers are awarded a distinctive Last Chance coin/medal, commemorating a memorable close to your running year.
