About This Race

Get ready to challenge yourself at the McDonald Forest 50K, affectionately known as "The Mac," one of Oregon's oldest and most cherished ultrarunning events. Marking its 30th anniversary on May 2, 2026, this 50-kilometer race in Corvallis, Oregon, offers a truly memorable trail experience. Typical race day conditions in early May feature comfortable highs around 66°F and lows near 42°F, with only a 13% chance of precipitation, creating ideal running weather for tackling the course.

The course, a challenging loop through Oregon State University's McDonald Forest and a section of Starker Forest's "hobbit trails," boasts approximately 6,800 feet of elevation gain. Runners will navigate about 20.4 to 21.9 miles of lovingly maintained singletrack trails interwoven with 9.5 to 10.9 miles of logging roads. While the terrain can be muddy and slippery after rain, the effort is rewarded with breathtaking scenic views of the Cascades, Coast Range, and Soap Creek Valley. Early May also showcases the forest in full bloom, with glowing dogwoods and delicate calypso orchids adding to the natural beauty. The race makes a notable return to McCulloch Peak, the highest point in McDonald Forest, and culminates in one of the "sweetest finishes" in ultrarunning—a pine needle-cushioned downhill trail back to the Forestry Club Cabin in Peavy Arboretum, the start and finish location.

"The Mac" is renowned for its friendly, community-oriented atmosphere and dedication to local causes, with proceeds benefiting local high school cross-country teams, the Corvallis Mountain Rescue Unit, and the OSU Research Forest. Runners can expect four well-stocked aid stations along the route, though a water bottle or hydration pack is mandatory as the event is cupless, promoting sustainability. An optional early start at 7:00 AM is available for those who prefer extra time, with the main race beginning at 8:00 AM. Post-race, celebrate your accomplishment with homemade vegan soup, bread, cookies, drinks, and even a bluegrass band at the finish line.
