Lace up your running shoes for the annual McHenry Lakefront 5K & Kids Fun Run, set to take place on Saturday, July 11, 2026, in picturesque McHenry, IL. Formerly known as the McHenry River Run, this cherished community event offers a perfect blend of competitive spirit and family fun. Typical race day conditions in July present pleasant temperatures, with highs around 83°F and lows near 63°F, and only a 15% chance of precipitation, ensuring comfortable running weather.
The 3.1-mile (5K) course is a highlight, boasting a USATF-certified, chip-timed route that promises a "nice, shaded, flat race course." Runners will start at Petersen Park Beach and enjoy a scenic journey along the Prairie Trail and through the charming Lakeland Park neighborhood, offering beautiful views without the challenge of significant elevation changes. For the younger athletes, the Kids Fun Run features a 50-meter dash for ages 3-5 and a 100-meter race for ages 6-8, ensuring every child can experience the thrill of race day. All youth participants receive a runner medal, with awards for the top three finishers in each Kids Fun Run distance, while 5K participants compete for overall male and female awards, as well as age group accolades.
Participants can pick up their bibs and shirts (while supplies last) on the Friday prior at the McHenry Recreation Center or on race day morning. The 5K kicks off at 8:00 AM CDT, preceded by the Kids Fun Run at 7:45 AM CDT, making for an energetic start to the day. This event truly embodies a festive, supportive atmosphere for runners of all ages and abilities, celebrating fitness and community along McHenry's beautiful lakefront.
