The Monarch Grind, scheduled for Saturday, June 27, 2026, in the picturesque town of Clark Fork, Idaho, is a formidable 59-mile gravel grinder designed to challenge endurance athletes. This isn't merely a race; it's an immersive journey into the breathtaking landscapes of the Idaho Panhandle National Forest. Riders should anticipate typical race day conditions, with highs around 77°F and lows near 45°F, accompanied by a minimal 8% chance of precipitation, providing an ideal climate for a demanding ride.
The 59-mile course boasts an impressive approximately 7,900 feet of elevation gain, predominantly traversing U.S. Forest Service gravel roads, accounting for 98% of the route. Beginning at 2,000 feet of elevation in Clark Fork, the route guides participants across a stunning royal blue river and through verdant fields before ascending into the mountains. This "grueling race" has been described by some as "sadistic" yet also praised as "one of the most stunning courses out there," delivering epic scenery and beautiful lake views from elevated vantage points. A crucial aid station, encountered at miles 16 and 54, is fully stocked with hydration, energy supplements, cookies, bananas, chips, mini bottles of Coke, and readily available first aid.
As the second event in the revered Idaho Panhandle Gravel Series, the Monarch Grind offers both spirited competition and a strong sense of camaraderie. This charitable endeavor also proudly supports the Pend O'reille Pedalers and KRFY - Panhandle Community Radio. With a limited number of entries, participants can expect dedicated on-course support, including vehicles for assistance and minor mechanical repairs. The adventure culminates back in Clark Fork with a well-deserved post-ride meal, refreshing beverages, a raffle, and an awards ceremony celebrating the top finishers.
