Prepare for an unforgettable weekend of dirt and determination at the Montana Gravel Challenge, a premier three-day, three-stage gravel event kicking off on May 1, 2026, in the scenic Frenchtown/Huson area near Missoula, Montana. This challenge caters to all, offering mass starts and categories for every age and ability, including a Recreation Division for those who wish to complete all stages at their own pace without podium pressure, and even a Virtual Division for remote participation. Typical race day conditions in early May feature comfortable highs around 64°F and lows near 33°F, with a minimal 6% chance of precipitation, though Montana weather always promises an element of adventure, from mud to sun.
The Montana Gravel Challenge boasts a diverse and demanding course across its three stages. Stage 1 is an approximately 11-mile time trial that is 100% gravel and dirt, featuring 756 feet of climbing around the Nine Mile area. Stage 2, the Southside/Petty Road course, spans 56 miles with a significant 3,000 feet of elevation gain, combining 38 miles of pavement with 18 miles of challenging gravel and dirt. This stage has historically incorporated sections like Skalkaho Pass, known for its dirt roads, brake bumps, potholes, and twisty paved descents, alongside the notoriously rugged Rock Creek Road (Ruff Ryders). The final day, Stage 3, is a 45-mile Rocky Mountain Roubaix circuit, including 1,711 feet of climbing over four laps of a course that is roughly half paved and half gravel around Huson. Riders can expect jaw-dropping views of the Bitterroot Mountains and valley throughout the event.
Known historically as the "Montana Hell Ride" for good reason, this race has earned a reputation for its challenging terrain, promising a "hard as hell" yet exhilarating experience for gravel enthusiasts. Fully stocked aid stations will be available on each stage, providing water, nutrition, gels, snacks, fruit, and electrolyte drinks to keep you fueled. Beyond the grit and glory, all finishers of the three-stage event earn an official Montana Gravel Challenge Hat, and those who complete all three events as part of the Montana Off Road Cup will receive a custom Montana Belt Buckle. The race headquarters in Huson offers onsite camping and trailer camping on the Big Sky Brewery property, ensuring a vibrant atmosphere throughout the weekend.
