This challenging 50-mile ultra, organized by Inside Trail Racing, unfolds across the historic Fort Ord National Monument and Laguna Seca Recreation Area, offering a captivating journey through coastal California terrain. Runners will tackle approximately 50.7 miles with a significant 7,080 feet of elevation gain, navigating a varied course composed of a 35-mile main loop and a shorter 15-mile loop. Expect everything from wide fire roads and smooth, twisting single-track to deep sand, rocky sections, and rooty climbs, ensuring a dynamic and engaging experience from start to finish.
The course is thoughtfully designed by Monterey Bay Area locals to showcase the natural beauty and unique history of Fort Ord National Monument, once a U.S. Army post. As you push through the miles, you'll be treated to spectacular vistas of Monterey Bay and its rolling hills, passing remnants of military history and running through a nature preserve dedicated to the endangered Smith's Blue Butterfly. Aid stations are strategically placed and well-stocked with a comprehensive array of ultra-runner essentials, including gels, chews, Stroopwafels, PB&J sandwiches, and a variety of beverages and snacks to keep you fueled. Drop bag access is available at key points, and pacers are welcome at the Laguna Seca aid station.
With a generous 14.5-hour time limit and a 6:30 AM start, the Monterey Ultra 50M provides ample opportunity to complete this rewarding challenge.
