This cherished 5.6-mile (9-kilometer) race is a true Helena classic, celebrated for its unique blend of urban start and demanding mountain trail running. The Mount Helena Run begins on the historic Last Chance Gulch in downtown Helena, starting near Birds & Beaseleys on the Walking Mall, before quickly transitioning to the rugged terrain of Mount Helena City Park. Runners will face a significant challenge, ascending 1,300 feet from a starting elevation of 4111 feet to a high point of 5456 feet, with approximately 1.5 miles on roads and over 4 miles of scenic single-track trails. This course is designed to test your limits, with steep climbs up trails like the 1906, Prairie, West End, Backside, and Hogback trails leading to the summit of Mount Helena. Your efforts will be richly rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the City of Helena, the expansive Prickly Pear Valley, and the majestic Elkhorn and Big Belt Mountains. The exhilarating descent back to Last Chance Gulch will challenge your quads after the lung-busting climb.

Known for its long-standing history dating back to 1975, the Mount Helena Run is organized by the Helena Vigilante Runners and promises an unforgettable experience for both seasoned trail runners and enthusiastic newcomers. Packet pickup for the race will be held from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM on race day at Birds & Beaseleys on the Walking Mall, with the race officially commencing at 10:00 AM MDT. Please note that for the safety and enjoyment of all participants, dogs and strollers are not permitted on the course.
