Embark on an unforgettable early season trail adventure at the Mt. Toby Ultra and 24K, returning to Sunderland, MA, on April 4, 2026. This celebrated event, known for its challenging yet rewarding trails, offers distances of 50K, 24K, and 13K, catering to a range of endurance runners. Starting and finishing at Sunderland Town Park, the courses wind through the scenic Mt. Toby State Forest, featuring a dynamic mix of rugged double track and technical single track trails.
Runners should prepare for significant elevation changes and diverse terrain. The 13K provides a challenging sampler, reaching Mt. Toby's peak once with approximately 1,500 feet of climbing. The 24K route, a single loop over and around the mountain, includes striking rock features, another summit ascent, and a unique scramble through a short cave, amassing over 2,700 feet of total climb. For the ultra-endurance athlete, the 50K course is a demanding figure-eight that summits Mt. Toby three times, incorporating the cave, a beautiful waterfall, and Bull Hill, all while tackling an impressive 6,100 to 7,000 feet of elevation gain. Headlamps are provided for the cave section, with a bypass option available.
Typical race day conditions in early April can see highs around 53F and lows around 30F, with a 17% chance of precipitation, so runners should be ready for anything from mud to potentially warmer spring weather. As a low-key race with a supportive atmosphere, the Mt. Toby Ultra is also a proud fundraiser for Girls on the Run of Western Massachusetts, making your challenging effort a contribution to an inspiring cause. Aid stations along the course offer water, energy drinks, and various snacks, though 13K participants are advised to carry their own fueling due to limited supplies on their single water stop.
