About This Race

Lace up your trail shoes for the NCTRaces: Bird Sanctuary, an unforgettable journey into the heart of Northern Wisconsin's natural beauty on April 18, 2026. Held in the picturesque Douglas County Wildlife Area, affectionately known as "The Bird Sanctuary" in Solon Springs, WI, this event offers exhilarating 10K and 20K distances. Runners will traverse 100% single-track sections of the iconic North Country Trail, making it an ideal race for both seasoned trail enthusiasts seeking a competitive edge and newcomers looking for a welcoming introduction to trail running. The course unfolds through a stunning brush prairie habitat, showcasing miles of open fields, vibrant wildflowers, serene ponds, and expansive views, with portions winding through charming timber sections. This early spring race often boasts trails clear of snow, providing a refreshing start to the running season.

The NCTRaces: Bird Sanctuary course is characterized by mostly rolling hills, with a few steeper inclines adding to the challenge without being overly technical. The 10K route features an elevation gain of approximately 400 feet, while the 20K covers about 750 feet of elevation. The 10K is an out-and-back course with a water-only aid station at the turnaround, while the 20K is a more comprehensive tour of the sanctuary, consisting of two out-and-back sections with a full aid station at the Start/Finish/Headquarters area and two water-only stations along the way. Race day typically brings comfortable spring conditions, with historical highs around 52°F and lows near 29°F, and only a 13% chance of precipitation, creating perfect running weather. The race headquarters at 13038 S. Bird Rd., Gordon, WI, serves as the central hub for packet pickup and boasts available RV sites.

Beyond the personal challenge, participating in NCTRaces: Bird Sanctuary supports a vital cause, as the event raises charitable donations for the Brule-St. Croix chapter of the North Country Trail Association, aiding in the maintenance and preservation of these cherished trails. All finishers will receive custom-made awards, with larger, custom awards presented to the top three overall finishers in each division. Join a community of up to 150 participants for a day of scenic running and contribute to the legacy of the North Country Trail.
